In November 2020, Scotland became the first country in the world to make period products free for all. Whilst this was a huge step towards bringing an end to period poverty, advocacy for access to free period products for all women is as crucial now as it ever was. The financial hardship imposed on women due to COVID-19 highlights how governments of the developed world should recognise that period products are not a luxury and women’s health and hygiene should not continue to be a taxable asset.
